Clipping without

Anything that clips while you play has to capture and encode while you play. CutBench does not run during the match at all. It works on the recording afterwards, so its cost to your in-game frame rate is zero. The trade is that clips arrive after the session, not on a hotkey.

01 · The short answer

Two ways to clip, only one costs frames.

Clipping happens in one of two places. During the match, which is what a replay buffer or an instant-clip hotkey does: something is capturing and encoding your frames the whole time you play. Or after the match, on a file that is already sitting on your drive, with the game closed.

Only the first shape can cost you frames, because only the first shape is running while the game needs the hardware. CutBench is the second shape. It does not install into your game, it does not sit in the present path, it does not hold a buffer open, and unless you launch it yourself it is not running while you play. That is not a low-overhead mode or a clever setting. There is nothing there to cost you anything.

The honest flip side: you do not get the clip ten seconds after the play. You get a ranked set of vertical clips once the session is over and the processing pass has finished.

02 · Where the frames go

What in-game capture actually costs.

People blame "recording" as if it were one thing. The cost is really spread over at least six separate jobs, and which one bites depends entirely on your build and your settings.

None of that makes in-game clippers bad software. It makes them software with a running cost, which is a normal trade and one plenty of players are happy to make.

03 · Measure it yourself

Averages lie. Check your 1% lows.

Before you change anything, get a number for your own machine. Figures published by other people are close to useless here, because the answer depends on your CPU headroom, your resolution, your capture settings and the game.

Do this once and you will know whether you have a problem worth solving. Plenty of people find their overhead is small enough to ignore, and that is a perfectly good outcome. This page is not trying to talk you out of a setup that already works.

05 · Fair play

When an in-game clipper is the right answer.

If you want the clip in your Discord within ten seconds of the play, press the hotkey. Nothing that works on files afterwards will ever beat that, and CutBench does not try to.

An in-game clipper is also the better tool when disk space is tight, because a replay buffer keeps thirty seconds instead of a three-hour file. If you play on an AMD or Intel Arc GPU, or on macOS or Linux, CutBench will not run for you at all, and a recorder or a cloud service is your option. And if your measured overhead turns out to be a rounding error on your rig, then the trade you were worried about does not exist. Keep what you have.

06 · The bridge

Record with whatever you already use.

CutBench is not a recorder and has no interest in replacing yours. It reads the files your existing setup already produces, so everything you tuned over the years keeps working exactly as it does today.

There is nothing to install into your game, no overlay to load, no hook and no capture driver. CutBench never sees your game while it is running. It sees a file, later.

On settings: a clean 1080p60 recording is plenty of source for a vertical clip. Recording higher costs you more overhead during play and buys very little once the clip is cropped to 9:16 for a phone screen. Recorder defaults and output formats change, so the notes above were checked on 14 August 2026.

The obvious objection: does that not just move the GPU cost somewhere else? Yes, and that is the whole point. It moves it to a time when no game needs the GPU. Start it when you stop playing, or leave it running overnight, and the frames it uses are frames nothing else wanted.

Is there clipping software that doesn’t lower FPS?

If it captures and encodes while the game is running, it has a cost. On modern NVIDIA cards the encode itself runs on a dedicated hardware block, so the hit is usually small, but it is not zero. The frame still has to be copied out of the render path, the driver still does work, and the file still has to be written to disk while you play.

Is there clipping software that doesn’t affect FPS at all?

Do the clipping after you play instead of during. Record with whatever you already use, then process the file once the game is closed. That is how CutBench works, so its cost to your in-game frame rate is zero by construction. The trade is that you get your clips after the session, not on a hotkey.

Does NVENC affect FPS?

Cheap is not the same as free. NVENC runs on a separate encoder block rather than the shader cores, so it does not fight your game for rendering time, but the capture path around it still costs something. The number depends on your resolution, frame rate, bitrate and how CPU bound the game already is, so measure it on your own machine rather than trusting a general figure.

Do replay buffers like ShadowPlay, Medal or Outplayed hurt performance?

They all take the same shape: a rolling buffer that captures and encodes continuously so the last few minutes are always available. That is genuinely useful, and it is also work your PC is doing every second you play. Check your 1% lows with the buffer on and off rather than your average frame rate, because frame time consistency is what usually moves first.

Can I use my existing OBS, ShadowPlay or Medal recordings with CutBench?

Yes. CutBench reads the standard MP4 and MKV files those tools produce. There is nothing to install into your game, no overlay and no hook. Point it at the folder your recordings already land in.

Can I run CutBench while I am playing?

You can, but do not expect it to be free. CutBench is a heavy GPU job, so running it during a match would cost you frames the same way any other GPU work would. Run it after the session, or leave it going overnight.

What do I need to run CutBench?

Windows 10 or 11, 8 GB of RAM, 30 GB of disk, and an NVIDIA GPU with 6 GB of VRAM and CUDA 11.8 or newer, meaning an RTX 2060, RTX 3050 8GB, RTX 4050 or better. AMD and Intel Arc GPUs are not supported, and there is no macOS or Linux build.
