How to clip on PC comes down to one question: which capture tool is already on your machine. NVIDIA and AMD both ship a rolling buffer with the driver, Windows has one built in, and OBS does it for free on anything. This page is the hotkey and the folder for each, and then the part every guide skips: what to do with the three hours you recorded around the moment.
The first job is capture: a tool sits in the background, keeps the last few minutes in a buffer, and writes a file when you press a key. That is what people mean when they ask how to clip something on PC, and it is already solved by software you did not have to install. The second job is finding the moment afterwards, inside a recording you did not clip at the time. Different tools, different problem, covered in section 06.
Every capture tool below does the same three things: it needs a buffer length, it needs a save hotkey, and it writes to a folder. Once you know those three settings for your tool, you know how to clip on it. Defaults are listed as the vendors document them; hotkeys can be changed and vendors do move them, so confirm in the overlay if yours differs.

Defaults as the vendors document them. All four hotkeys can be changed in the tool's settings, and vendors occasionally move them between versions, so treat the table as where to look rather than as a promise.
Every tool above saves the moment you noticed. None of them helps with the moment you did not: the play that happened while you were busy playing, the reaction you forgot to press the key for, the session you recorded in full and never rewatched. That footage is on the drive, and the buffer tools have no opinion about it.
That is the job CutBench does, and it is the only one it does. The honest costs: Windows 10 or 11, an NVIDIA GPU with 6 GB of VRAM for the supported path, and a 3-hour session takes roughly 2 to 5 hours on an RTX 3060 class card, so most people start it when they stop playing and read the list in the morning. On an AMD card it runs below the supported spec on the processor and takes several times longer, which is spelled out on the AMD page rather than hidden here. Turn on the rolling buffer in the capture tool you already have, set how far back it reaches, and press the save hotkey after the moment. On an NVIDIA card that is Instant Replay in the NVIDIA app with Alt+F10. On AMD it is Instant Replay in Adrenalin with Ctrl+Shift+S. On any Windows PC, Xbox Game Bar saves the last stretch with Win+Alt+G once background recording is on. OBS does the same with its Replay Buffer on any GPU.
Use Xbox Game Bar. It is part of Windows 10 and 11. Open Settings, go to Gaming, then Captures, switch on background recording and set the length, then press Win+Alt+G during play. The file lands in your Videos folder under Captures.
Open the NVIDIA app overlay with Alt+Z, switch Instant Replay on and set its length, which goes up to 20 minutes. Alt+F10 saves the buffer to a folder under Videos named after the game. Alt+F9 starts a manual recording if you want the whole session instead.
The same three ways as Windows 10: Xbox Game Bar with Win+Alt+G, your GPU vendor's Instant Replay, or OBS's Replay Buffer. Windows 11 did not change the Game Bar hotkeys; the capture settings moved to Settings, Gaming, Captures.
Set the buffer length to five minutes in your tool. The NVIDIA app and AMD Adrenalin both allow it directly, Xbox Game Bar allows up to ten minutes, and OBS allows whatever its memory cap permits. Each save is then a five-minute file, so expect a heavy folder after a long night.
A little, and it depends on the tool. The driver buffers on NVIDIA and AMD encode on a dedicated block, so the cost is small. Game Bar and OBS can cost more depending on settings. The exact sources of the drop, and what does not cause it, are on our clipping without an FPS drop page.
