01 · The difference

One works from an upload. The other works from your drive.

Opus Clip's job starts once your file has reached its servers. From there it transcribes the speech, ranks the candidate segments it finds, reframes to vertical and burns in captions. Its own site describes reading visual, audio and sentiment cues rather than the transcript alone, and lists gaming among the genres it handles, so we are not going to tell you it is deaf to everything but words. It is quick, it runs in a browser tab, and it behaves the same on a Mac, a Chromebook or a locked-down work laptop.

CutBench starts before the upload, because there is no upload. You point it at the raw recording in your captures folder and the whole pass runs on your own NVIDIA GPU. It reads the picture as well as the sound, and judges a moment on what actually happened rather than on how loud it got. That is combined into a score for every candidate moment. Each moment is then trimmed to its payoff, cropped to 9:16, captioned, and handed back as a finished file in a list sorted best first.

One thing is worth stating plainly, because a lot of tools in this category imply otherwise. Nothing in that pipeline reads text on screen. There is no OCR, so no kill feed is being parsed and no scoreboard is being read. The ranking works from speech, from sound, from cuts, and from a classifier trained on what your HUD looks like in a given state. That is a narrower claim than saying the software understands your game, and it is the one that survives being checked.

The difference we can actually stand behind is what the ranking was tuned on. Twenty minutes of quiet farming followed by nine seconds of a raid going badly wrong is the exact shape CutBench was calibrated against, on Rust and ARC Raiders footage, with the quiet treated as context and the nine seconds as the clip. A general-purpose model may well find that moment too. We have not run Opus Clip against our own sessions, so we are not going to tell you how it does.

The second gap is where the work happens and how the bill arrives. Your session stays on your disk. The pass runs on hardware you already bought for the game. The license is one line item on Steam rather than a charge that repeats until you remember to stop it.

Checked on opus.pro/pricing on 14 August 2026: the Starter plan is $15 a month and bills monthly only. The free tier gives 60 credits a month, and clips made on it stop being exportable after three days. Prices move, so check before you buy. Its own site says its clipping model works across genres including gaming and video with little or no dialogue, so we are not claiming otherwise. Blank cells and dashes mean the feature is not offered, not that it is offered badly. "Not verified" means exactly that, and we left it rather than guess.

03 · A worked example

One three-hour session, both ways.

Start with the file, because everything else follows from its size. Three hours of 1080p60 gameplay written by OBS or ShadowPlay at around 30 Mbit/s comes to roughly 40 GB. Capture at 15 Mbit/s and it is nearer 20 GB. Capture at 4K and it is several times either figure. Whatever your settings, it is the largest thing you made that week.

The hosted route has to move that file. On a 20 Mbit/s upstream connection, 40 GB takes about four and a half hours, and the uplink is saturated the whole time, so you are not playing anything competitive while it goes. On the 10 Mbit/s upstream that plenty of home plans still ship, it is closer to nine hours. In practice almost nobody does this. They cut the session down first, by hand, so that only the parts they already believe in get uploaded. That step never appears on a pricing page and it is the expensive one.

Attention is the number that actually decides this. Scrubbing three hours at four times speed to mark the moments is forty-five minutes of watching during which you can do nothing else, and you do it before the tool has been paid to do anything. Multiply that by however many unwatched sessions are sitting on the drive.

The local route moves nothing. CutBench opens the file where it already is and works through the whole thing. A 3-hour session takes roughly two to five hours on an RTX 3060 class card, unattended. You start it before dinner or before bed, and you come back to a ranked list where the weak candidates have already sorted themselves to the bottom. Bytes uploaded: zero. Bandwidth spent: zero. Time you personally sat there: the click at the start, and a few minutes at the end.

None of this makes the hosted route slow in the sense people normally mean. Once your file is on their servers, Opus Clip turns clips around quickly, faster than a local GPU will. The wait is at the door rather than at the counter, and a local pass simply has no door.

Then the year. At $15 a month, billed monthly, twelve months is $180 and twenty-four months is $360. CutBench is $34.99 paid once. The one-time price is behind for the first two months and ahead from the third onward. By the end of year one the gap is about $145, and by the end of year two about $325, at which point the comparison stops being interesting.

04 · What it costs

A monthly bill versus one line item.

Checked on opus.pro/pricing on 14 August 2026: the cheapest paid tier, Starter, is $15 a month, and that page offered monthly billing only. There is a free tier at 60 credits a month, and clips made on it stop being exportable after three days.

That three-day window deserves a second read if you batch your editing. A session clipped on Sunday and forgotten until Thursday is a session you get to clip again. It is a reasonable thing for a hosted service to do, since storage is their cost rather than yours, but it quietly rules out the workflow where footage piles up and gets cleared once a fortnight.

Opus Clip also meters its plans in credits rather than in hours of video, so before you build a habit around three-hour sessions, open their pricing page and check what a 180-minute upload actually costs in credits on the tier you are considering. We would rather send you to the number than estimate it here and be wrong in your favour.

06 · Fair play

When Opus Clip is the better pick.

Opus Clip covers a far wider range of video than we do. Its own site lists vlogs, gaming, sports and interviews, and it needs no particular graphics card to handle any of them. If the video is people talking, a podcast, a webinar, an interview, or a stream where the value is the commentary rather than the fight, choose it without feeling like you settled.

Choose it as well if you are on macOS or Linux, on an AMD or Intel Arc GPU, on a laptop with integrated graphics, or on a machine you do not administer. CutBench runs on none of those and there is no fallback path, so we would rather say it on this page than after you have paid. Choose it if your footage arrives as a link, from a phone or a console, instead of as a file in a capture folder. Choose it if you need the clip in the next ten minutes, because a hosted service hands the work to a machine that is already warm while a local pass over three hours of video runs for hours. And choose it if you want one tool that covers every kind of video you make, rather than a sharp one that covers a single kind.

The short version: Opus Clip optimises for reach, across platforms, devices and content types. CutBench optimises for depth on one platform doing one job, on hardware you already own. Those are different bets, and only one of them is yours.

How is CutBench different from Opus Clip?

Is CutBench a good Opus Clip alternative for gameplay specifically?

That is the case it is built for. CutBench takes a whole 3-hour session rather than a clip you already chose, and it reads the picture as well as the sound, not only what was said out loud. If your recordings are quiet farming punctuated by short fights, that is the difference that matters. If your recordings are mostly commentary, a hosted general-purpose tool is the better fit.

Does CutBench upload my gameplay to the cloud?

CutBench is tuned for gameplay. For podcasts, webinars and talking-head content, a general-purpose tool like Opus Clip will very likely rank better than we do, because that is the material it is built around. CutBench's ranking leans on game events, not just spoken words.

Can I keep using both?

Plenty of people should. Opus Clip for the talking videos and anything that arrives from a phone or a Mac, CutBench for the long local gameplay sessions where the hard part is finding the moment at all. A one-time license does not expire while it sits unused, which makes keeping both cheaper than it sounds.

What GPU does CutBench need?
